چکیده

In this paper, we examine spatio-temporal evolution of free moving drops in a vertically stratified fluid and study the role of stratification on the rise velocity of a single drop, two drops and a swarm of rising drops. Utilizing fully resolved three-dimensional Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS), we discuss the effects of density stratification on the interaction of two drops and microstructure of swarm of drops. We considered nearly spherical drops in our simulations. To study the drafting-kissing-tumbling (DKT) process in a stably stratified fluid, we carried out simulations with different initial angles of approach and found that for the side-by-side configuration, the drops separate from each other in both weakly stratified and homogenous fluids but stratification suppresses the rise velocity of the drops. For the case of multiple drops, we found that the time-averaged Reynolds number of multiple drops in a linearly stratified fluid is smaller than that of a homogenous fluid. After the initial transition period, the drops in the stratified fluid rise less than the ones in the homogeneous case.

Fedsm 2013-16046 Interaction between a Pair of Drops Ascending in a Linearly Stratified Fluid

In this paper, we provide fully resolved three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of ascending motion of a pair of drops in a linearly stratified fluid using a finite-volume/front-tracking method. We study the density stratification effects on the rise velocity of drops and their stable position for different initial alignments. Due to the formation of a jet in the lee of a single drop ri...

Vertical transport of particles, drops, and microorganisms in density stratified fluids

The vertical motion of particles, drops and organisms through density stratified fluids is ubiquitously found in oceans and lakes. Settling dynamics of marine snow particles, rising motion of drops during oil spills, formation of phytoplankton blooms, and diel vertical migration of organisms are just a few of these examples. Transport properties in these examples are modified when the density o...

Rising motion of a swarm of drops in a linearly stratified fluid

Direct numerical simulations of a swarm of deformable drops rising in density stratified fluids are presented at intermediate Reynolds numbers. All flow scales are fully resolved using front-tracking/ finite-volume method. The average rise velocity and velocity fluctuations of the swarm are reduced in the presence of density stratification. The isotropy in velocity fluctuations is enhanced as t...

Interaction of two deformable viscous drops under external temperature gradient

The axisymmetric deformation and motion of interacting droplets in an imposed temperature gradient is considered using boundary-integral techniques for slow viscous motion. Results showing temporal drop motion, deformations and separation are presented for equal-viscosity fluids. The focus is on cases when the drops are of equal radii or when the smaller drop trails behind the larger drop. For ...
